Many Chelsea FC fans have been waiting with bated breath since the triumphant finish to last season’s Premier League campaign for the beginning of the new season. While we all celebrated and enjoyed our return to the top of the pyramid in England, we also miss being able to watch the Blues every weekend.

Starting against FA Cup holders Arsenal, Chelsea will return to action against rival opposition in the FA Community Shield, the traditional season opener. Despite the fact that the Community Shield is mostly a glorified friendly, I’m excited for it thanks to a number of interesting storylines.

The first, and potentially biggest, story comes about thanks to another Chelsea star being transferred out to a rival team in England. Longtime Chelsea FC keeper Petr Cech has left the club, following the rise of Belgian star Thibaut Courtois in his first season back from a 3 year stint at Atletico Madrid. Cech, still one of the best keepers in world football, wanted to remain in England and play for a competitive side, and when Arsenal came calling with a £10M offer, Blues boss Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich decided to grant his transfer to North London after a decade of loyal support of the Blues.

Beyond the obvious storyline of Cech making his official debut for the Arsenal, there are the usual themes that come out of a Chelsea-Arsenal match, with the two managers engaging in their usual banter. There is no love lost between Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, with the two nearly coming to blows at the touchline during a match last season.

For my part, I’m simply excited to see a competitive, high energy match between two big rivals, and see the boys in Blue back at Wembley, our 2nd home.
