Chelsea must take advantage of Thorgan Hazard buy-back clause
By Travis Tyler
Chelsea inserted a buy-back clause when they sold off Thorgan Hazard. The Blues must take advantage of this and bring him back to Stamford Bridge.
According to Bild (via ESPNFC), Chelsea have until the end of the year to activate Thorgan Hazard’s buyback clause. For the low, low price of €15 million, Chelsea could have two Hazards on the books.
Thorgan has been in fine form at the start of the season, scoring 6 goals in 7 appearances in his new position further up the pitch. The younger Hazard returning to Chelsea works on so many levels that it would be foolish for the club not to bring him back for such a low price.
Bought just a few days after Eden Hazard, it seemed as though Thorgan’s transfer was simply a sweetener for his brother. This proved more or less true as Thorgan was sold after just 3 seasons on loan.

Rumors have died down recently with regard to Eden Hazard trying to move to another club, but bringing his brother back would certainly make him more willing to stay with the club. Eden, even with a dip in form, is still Chelsea’s best player. Anything that helps to keep him at the club is a worthwhile endeavor.
Thorgan also has a connection to another Chelsea player: Andreas Christensen. Both have played together since the start of the 2015/2016 season at Borussia Monchengladbach. Christensen is enjoying his time in Germany, even hinting that he would not mind staying.
It would be criminal to allow Christensen to leave Chelsea, especially given that he could almost certainly slot right into the starting lineup. Having a player like Thorgan that he knows, and has played with in a vast amount of games, would make Christensen much more comfortable when he makes his return to West London.

If Antonio Conte’s eventual goal is to shift Chelsea to a 3-5-2 formation, Thorgan would be a fantastic player to have. Borussia Monchengladbach have started the season using that exact formation (or the slight variant 3-4-1-2), with Christensen in the center of the back three and Hazard playing as a forward.
Chelsea’s current striker depth is thin, so acquiring a player that not only can play forward but one that is used to playing forward in one of Conte’s preferred formations would be extremely valuable.
Furthermore, Hazard is able to play in any attacking midfield role, though he does seem to be at his best when he plays centrally. Even if he is only ever able to be a super sub, Thorgan would be well worth his low price tag.

Thorgan would be another member of the ever growing group of players returning to Chelsea for a second stint. That would be vastly preferable to him joining the group of former players who are now approaching the top levels of the game, such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
Rare enough as it is for Chelsea to include a buy back clause, getting him back now before he becomes another regretful transfer would be a stroke of brilliance that is becoming rarer and rarer from the board.
He may never reach the highest levels of the game or be as good as Eden. But for only €15 million, his transfer would be a steal for what he is able to offer. Chelsea simply should not risk Thorgan Hazard becoming a player with a €60 million price tag when they want him back.
