Chelsea are in a tricky spot at the moment, giving licence to British tabloids to concoct bizarre transfer rumours again. The latest features Michael Keane.

Who said that the transfer window shut? That doesn’t matter as the winter transfer window opens in three months! The tabloids have returned to their favourite pastime on the back of Chelsea’s poor results, claiming that the Blues are pondering a bid for Michael Keane.

The Mirror is the source of the story, as the publication states that the club are willing to offer as much as £25 million for the Burnley defender.

"Chelsea are prepared to pay up to £25million for Burnley’s Michael Keane to help solve their defensive crisis…Chelsea are understood to have made a preliminary enquiry about Keane, who was wanted by Premier League champions Leicester in the summer."

Before we disparage Keane, let’s establish that he is a fine Premier League player. However, the fact that this rumour arose of thin air is ridiculous. Moreover, it is another example of how desperate the punditry perceive affairs at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have continued to embarrass themselves following last season’s disastrous Premier League defence. In particular, the defence have amounted to the equivalent of a joke. Michael Emenalo and friends failed to effectively recruit in that department over the summer and they are paying the price.

If these reports have a shade of truth, then the club are set to offer excessive amounts of money for a player who probably is not worth it.

Michael Keane moved on from Manchester United having failed to make the grade. He has rebuilt his career, taking advantage of his youth, at Burnley and is on track to forge a decent Premier League career. He is not yet a £25 million winter signing, though.

More from Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours

Chelsea’s reliance on John Terry for any semblance of defence lays bare the club’s predicament. The Blues are trying to challenge for the Premier League title on the back of a 35-year-old who is due to retire in the next two years.

Encouragingly, Kurt Zouma should return by November. However, doubts still surround the type of player he will now be. Given the severity of his knee injury, the Frenchman may not fulfill the great potential he once promised.

Considering this, the press have reason to return to the transfer rumour drawing board. Chelsea have never been linked with a move for Michael Keane, but now they are apparently keen on a big-money deal for him.

The worrying thing is that the Blues may just have to go through with it.
