With Chelsea’s new inspired form, does the precocious Belgium have a chance in the first team? Let’s examine the curious case of Charly Musonda.

After a robust start of the season for Chelsea, Antonio Conte has possibly figured out what needed to change in order to get back to winning ways. From last season’s title winning formation (3-4-3) the Italian boss has now adopted slightly different tactics (3-5-2).

Since the change, Chelsea came out victorious in a thrilling game against Manchester United and completely destroyed West Brom (1-0 and 4-0 respectively). This new system means that the Blues now have less use for wingers. The emphasis is more on the midfield and the men at the point of attack – usually Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata.

With that being said, the January transfer window is now less than two months away and there has been some speculation about the future of some players at the club. The first is Willian, who could be on his way out in order to purchase Lucas Moura from PSG. Many fans would oppose such a move since Chelsea have sold several players and failed to replace them. The departure of more talent could cost the club any chance of winning silverware.

However, there is one player that strikes curiosity amongst the fans. Although not often talked about, (unless he blows off steam on an Instagram post) Charly Musonda jr could be one of those departures.

Hack-a-Hazard: An increasingly futile and gratuitous tactic by Chelsea’s rivals

With only two appearances in the Premier League and two more in the League Cup, his future at the club looks very uncertain. Of course, he has to battle for a place in the team against the likes of Willian, Pedro and his fellow countryman Eden Hazard (who has been in fantastic form since his return from injury).

The youngster was given a vote of confidence by the manager this season. Not sending him out on loan (again) and handing him the number 17, previously worn by Hazard, are signs of trust. He has a lot of potential and a bright future ahead, but the big question still remains, is that future with Chelsea FC?

With Chelsea’s change of formation, one can only wonder if he can fit the style of play. While he has the ability to play on the wings, playing almost as a second striker and linking up with Morata and/or Batshuayi is a different ball game.

During his few appearances he looked insecure at times, weak in challenges and lacking precision in his passes. Although he is quick on his feet and agile in one-on-one situations, we have yet to see a real attacking threat from him. This is not saying that he does not have it, but rather he could be lacking in confidence and experience.

Chelsea are back in business this week in the Champions League against Qarabag and Liverpool next weekend. While these are must wins for the Blues, Musonda is not likely to start in any of these two matches.

However, the youngster will be hoping for more chances in the near future to show Conte and the rest of fans what he is capable of. Will he get those opportunities? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
