Fate keeps putting Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain against each other. It appears set to do so again in the summer over managers.

Chelsea and PSG appear to be tied together by fate. It began when former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti took over at the newly super rich Paris side. In a similar fashion as the Blues post Roman Abramovich purchase, PSG spent heavy to win as much as possible as quickly as possible.

Having dominated the league, the ownership shifted their attention to the Champions League. And much like Chelsea when they made the switch, any manager incapable of attaining the trophy had a short lifespan at the club. The two sides even faced off in the competition with heated battles.

Fast forward to now. Both clubs are in flux. Both need a reboot of some sort. So naturally both are playing games over the same managers.

First of all, both clubs are rumored to be targeting Luis Enrique. That makes sense. Enrique is the highest profile yet unemployed manager at the moment. Both clubs are fond of his style of play and would like the idea of him managing massive egos like he did at Barcelona successfully. Both have the resources to be enticing to Enrique.

Then there is Conte. It has been heavily reported that Conte will not last beyond the season. Conte continues to stand by his contract which has another year. PSG had Conte high on their short list but recent rumors have said that he has fallen down. So if Enrique was a tug of war game, Conte looks like hot potato.

There is, of course, nothing wrong with either club sticking with their current manager. Conte needs resources but he has proven, even after a bad run as of late, that he is a world class manager. Unai Emery, meanwhile, has made PSG look better than they have in years.

Both clubs naturally look at the man in charge as a needed change when they look at their issues. The buck has to stop somewhere. But what both clubs really need is a cultural reboot.

Chelsea and PSG are coasting upon their successes. This is the second season in four where the squad has massively fallen off after winning the title. PSG, meanwhile, can win the title nearly every year. But they always slip up in the Champions League in embarrassing fashion.

The reason why Conte and Enrique are targets for PSG is because they need a cultural reboot. They need someone to pull them out of the funk they find themselves in every Champions League.

And Chelsea need a manager to keep the squad going after winning the title. If that is not Conte, then Enrique will be next. The only purpose would be a refresh to square one where they can go on to the title once more.

Because of Chelsea’s and PSG’s needs, they are likely to face off in the summer. They will do so over Luis Enrique or over Antonio Conte.

In this fight, Chelsea will struggle. PSG blew the transfer market apart to snatch a Champions League. They could do so again with the managerial market if the Blues are not prepared to match their Paris counterparts.
