Le Saux Thinks Luke Shaw Should Stay at Southampton

Chelsea legend Graeme Le Saux was asked recently about potential Chelsea transfer target and Southampton fullback Luke Shaw and he was full of praise for the youngster. He also believes that Shaw should hold off on a move to Chelsea and continue his development at Southampton. Le Saux played for both the Blues and Saints has a unique perspective on the matter as he is familiar with both clubs. His main argument for Shaw remaining with the Saints is that the youngster is starting regularly for his club at an important time in his development.

Le Saux’s full comments here:

"“I’ve been watching [Shaw] play quite a lot. He has the qualities of an attacking fullback who has a lot of pace and a lot of energy. His defending is getting better as he gets more experienced. He’s still very young and the more experience he gains for his club and at [England] under-21 level, I feel that he’s in the right place at the moment and his development is crucial.”"

Shaw has been pegged by many as the natural successor to Ashley Cole at leftback when he makes his long anticipated move to Chelsea. The youngster is being targeted by a host of top clubs but many believe his support of Chelsea as a boy will be the difference. Cole has seen his place in the side taken over by Cezar Azpilicueta who is more of a natural rightback. Ryan Bertrand has also been pegged to succeed Cole but he is currently on loan at Aston Villa and has seen his star fall since he became a member of the senior squad.

Le Saux’s comments should not worry Chelsea supporters who admire Shaw but he does make a good point. Shaw is the unquestioned starter for Southampton and is gaining valuable experience in the league and cup competitions. At just 18 years old, he has the rest of his career ahead of him and if he is brought to Stamford Bridge, he can not be a third or fourth choice defender because that will hinder his development. He has already shown is he good enough for the Premier League so there is no sense in loaning him out either. If Chelsea does indeed sign the youngster this summer it will surely be the end of Ashley Cole’s career with the Blues.
