Chelsea FC defender David Luiz believes the Blues will have had a poor season if they finish without a trophy but deserve credit for what they’ve done. To use his words, it will be considered a “s*** season” if the Blues end the season trophyless but that is more likely after losing to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semifinals.

David Luiz’s comment about Chelsea’s season:

"“Sometimes it is possible to win. Like the season we won the Champions League was a s*** season until the end – and then we won two titles. You keep fighting in the league, because mathematically you can win. But it will be so difficult. You can say this is a s*** season when you don’t have trophies at a big club – that’s true.In the end you need to remember everyone here is their own man, and everyone here gave their best this season. Everyone here can make mistakes sometimes, and that is normal. But you give everything. It is not about a result that means you don’t have a trophy. It is if you didn’t play, you didn’t run, you didn’t give your best. We gave our best in many, many games. Like [against Atletico] – we gave our best. But sometimes it is possible to win, sometimes it is not.Next season we will have a plan, we will have many fantastic players and everyone will want to win trophies. Because at this club it is normal, when you are sitting at home on the sofa and looking at the television, to see Chelsea fighting for trophies.”"

The most important takeaway from David Luiz’s comments is that it is effort that determines what is and is not a poor season. To an extent he has a point because you really can’t win every game or every trophy but at a club like Chelsea, winning trophies every year is a necessity. The question then is, is the 2012/13 campaign considered successful if all Chelsea won was the Europa League? Would Chelsea fans have traded the Europe League for a place in the Champions League semifinals? It is certainly a complicated question that fans have to ask themselves before they decide whether this season has been successful or not.
