Paris Saint Germain chief Nasser al-Khelaifi has recently reiterated the club’s stance that Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani will not be leaving in the summer. Cavani has expressed his discontent with the club and the fact that he is playing out of position on the wing when he considers himself a true center forward. Rumors have swirled about possible destinations for the striker including Manchester United and Chelsea FC but PSG seem adamant on not selling. In truth they have every right to hold on to one of their prized assets in the 27 year old that many consider to be world class.
While he has not quite set the scoring charts alight for PSG, he has still scored 25 goals in 42 appearances while playing out of position. The big question now for the club in the wake of Financial Fair Play may be to decide whether to move Cavani or Zlatan Ibrahimovic to comply with the new wage bill regulations set forth by UEFA.
Paris Saint Germain chief Nasser al-Khelaifi on Edinson Cavani’s future with the club in the wake of Financial Fair Play:
"“Cavani? He will stay here – he has a contract with us. About Financial Fair Play, I am still very confident, we are still in talks with UEFA. I don’t confirm the sanctions – we will play in the Champions League, but may be with conditions. We are going on with our project and no one can stop us from dreaming.”"
If PSG do decide to offload either Edinson Cavani or Zlatan Ibrahimovic they will find no shortage of suitors for either striker. The smarter long term decision would be to sell Ibrahimovic who, despite having a phenomenal season, is 33 years old and in the presumed twilight of his career. Cavani is still 27 years old and could easily perform at a high level for another five plus years. Cavani will have his chance to impress when he travels to Brazil for the World Cup but it remains to be seen if his performance there will be enough to convince the club to sell the Swede and focus on him instead.
