Michael Essien and Chelsea FC youngster and Vitesse Arnhem loanee Christian Atsu have been named to the 26-man provisional Ghana World Cup squad for Brazil 2014. The team will cut three more players after they face the Netherlands in a friendly match on May 31st. The players represent opposite ends of the age and experience spectrum for the Black Stars but both will play a crucial role for their nation in Brazil.

Christian Atsu has been on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and has scored five goals for the Dutch club. The 22 year old has also made 21 appearances for Ghana and has also scored five times in international football and was a shoo-in for the Ghana World Cup squad. His future is bright as ever as he will look to break in to the Chelsea first team in coming years.

Michael Essien made the move to AC Milan on a free transfer last summer after Chelsea released him from his contract as a reward for his years of service to the club. He has not had the best of seasons with the club and has yet to score for the Rossoneri but is still a legendary figure in his native country. His experience and leadership are his best traits now but he is still capable of imposing his will on a match but not nearly as often as he used to when he earned the nickname “The Bison”.
