Ray Wilkins: Chelsea FC Would Have Won The League With Diego Costa

Former Chelsea FC assistant coach Ray Wilkins told talkSPORT that he believes the club would have easily won the Premier League if they had Diego Costa. The Blues finished four points behind eventual champions Manchester City and had they won two very winnable matches, on paper at least, against Aston Villa and Norwich City they would have lifted the Premier League trophy. Jose Mourinho bemoaned the lack of a striker that has a “killer instinct” on his roster and pointed to that as the reason why they did not win the league.

Ray Wilkins on the difference Diego Costa would have made for Chelsea this season:

"“Costa’s a little bit in the mould of [Alvaro] Negredo, Negredo just before Christmas was absolutely outstanding. I think this young man is in a very similar mould to him. He likes to get stuck in, he’s physical and I think that’s what Chelsea have lacked this season. They’ve lacked an abundance of goals from the forward players. If Chelsea had a 20-goal man they would have won the title comfortably but that wasn’t the case and hopefully they can address that situation.”"

What Wilkins is saying is nothing new to Chelsea fans. The strikers on the Chelsea roster all had subpar seasons with the exception of Samuel Eto’o who was decent but not up to the club’s standards. Diego Costa is exactly the type of striker that Chelsea needs. A striker that is physical and can beat up on defenses if he is not able to score but can also create something out of nothing. He is also very strong in the air which none of Chelsea’s current strikers are. If the rumors are true about Diego Costa joining Chelsea this summer then we will all get to see if Wilkins is right.
