Reports from the Mirror indicate that Chelsea midfielder and all time leading scorer Frank Lampard has signed a contract with MLS side New York City FC.

NYCFC, which is set to join MLS as an active team next season, is a joint venture between the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball and Manchester City in an attempt to bolster both the game of football and Man City’s brand in the United States. The article states that Lampard was at Manchester City’s Carrington training complex along with former Atletico Madrid striker David Villa, who is also reported to be signing with the New York side. The two were reportedly talking with NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis.

Frank Lampard joined Chelsea from West Ham United on an £11M transfer in 2001; since then he has won 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and both the Champions and Europa League once. During his 13 seasons, ‘Super’ Frank Lampard scored 211 goals for the West London club, leaving him top of the scoring charts.

Lampard reportedly took a large pay cut in his weekly wages to join the newest member of MLS, but sources say his contract is loaded with bonuses from the club, making it a respectable contract.

As the new team won’t play their first match until March of 2015, there is still the chance of Frank Lampard rejoining Chelsea on loan until the MLS season begins, but as with the rest of this story those details have not been confirmed by either club nor the player or his representation.

Should these reports pan out, it would be a massive coup for NYCFC in their attempt to carve out a spot in the massive New York market, as well as in MLS as a whole.
