Chelsea FC Goalkeeper Jamal Blackman Signs Extension

Chelsea FC Goalkeeper Jamal Blackman has signed an extension with the club that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2018/19 season. The young keeper spent the 2013/14 season as the understudy to third Chelsea keeper Henrique Hilario and will likely do the same next year. At 20 years old he is still eligible to play for the U21 team but he has likely progressed past that stage in his development.

Jamal Blackman has been with Chelsea since he was 13 years old and after settling in at the academy, he was promoted to the youth team in 2009. He did not make much of an impact or hold down a starting spot in the youth team until 2010. He became the unquestioned number one for the Chelsea youth team and went on to put on a series of great performances that caught the eye of the senior team staff.

In the summer of 2011, Jamal Blackman was selected to travel to Asia for a preseason tour with the first team and made his debut against the Thailand All-Stars in July. He went on to make several more appearances late in matches in the preseason tour and got his first taste of a Premier League attack when he faced Manchester City on the tour in the United States.

He likely will not make an impact for Chelsea this season with the trio of Mark Schwarzer, Petr Cech, and Thibaut Courtois ahead of him on the depth chart. If Blackman is looking to train and learn from the talented keepers ahead of him then he will stay at Chelsea. However a loan would be best for the young keeper and a Premier League loan is unlikely so a move to a Championship side may be on the cards.
