Didier Drogba Not Enough To Inspire Ivory Coast Over Colombia

The Ivory Coast brought on former Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba in the 60th minute of their match against Colombia but the big striker was not enough to inspire the Elephants to victory over Los Cafeteros. In the first match Drogba was brought on against Japan while the Ivory Coast was trailing by a goal and looking ragged. Within minutes of his entrance in to the foray Drogba created a fine chance for Gervinho that was well cleared by the Japanese defense. Just minutes after that the Ivory Coast scored two goals courtesy of Gervinho and Wilfried Bony and had taken control of the match

The match against Colombia was still tied at 0-0 when Drogba came on and his first touch of the ball was to clear a corner from James Rodriguez. Unfortunately just a few minutes later it was Didier Drogba who was partially at fault for Colombia’s opener as he was beaten to a corner by Rodriguez who sent a bullet header past keeper Boubacar Barry. Five minutes after scoring the opener it was Colombia on the counter attack from a Ivory Coast corner and Juan Quintero gave Colombia a two goal advantage.

The Elephants would get their breakthrough minutes after Quintero’s goal due to some fine dribbling in the box by the AS Roma man Gervinho. He received the ball on the left side of the box, dummied a defender, dribbled past two more, and lashed home from six yards out past David Ospina. The goal gave the Ivory Coast the hope it needed and they consistently threatened Colombia’s goal but due to some cynical tactics by the opposition and some poor finishing they could not find the breakthrough.

Ivory Coast head to their final match against Greece needing a win and some help in the other results to ensure that they advance out of their group. A draw in tonight’s match between Japan and Greece would be the best result and the Elephants would just need to beat the Greeks to advance to the next round.
