World Cup: Frank Lampard To Captain England Against Costa Rica

In their final World Cup group stage match against the already qualified Costa Rica, England manager Roy Hodgson has sent out a much changed starting eleven with Chelsea FC’s Frank Lampard as the captain over Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard. Roy Hodgson has also selected Ross Barkley and Adam Lallana over Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck and has modified his back four but kept in Chelsea FC’s Gary Cahill.

England are facing the side with a 100% record in their group so far and the Costa Ricans have done what the Three Lions could not and have defeated both Uruguay and Italy. The Costa Ricans were supposed to be the team on the bottom of the group and the match on the schedule that the others would circle for a supposedly assured three points. Obviously this is not how things have worked out as Los Ticos are top of the group and will look to stay there.

This match is a chance for some of England’s young stars to try and prove themselves on the international stage. Players like Jack Wilshere, Luke Shaw, and Phil Jones are seen as the future of the Three Lions and it may be the time for them to be handed larger roles in the England setup. England was supposed to be a perfect mix of veteran experience and young dynamic players but this summer they have failed to really come together and their stars, particularly Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, have failed to shine on football’s biggest stage.

The England Lineup today against Costa Rica:
Goalkeeper: Ben Foster
Defenders: Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones. Luke Shaw
Midfielders: Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, Frank Lampard (c), Jack Wilshere, James Milner
Forwards: Daniel Sturridge
