Christian Atsu was excellent for Vitesse last year and will be sorely missed and will be difficult to replace. He was named the player of the year last season and was one of the few players to maintain his form as the Dutch side struggled after the turn of the new year. Vitesse is considered by many as the “Chelsea B” side and some of Chelsea’s other youngsters will certainly be making the move there on loan but Atsu will be difficult to replace.
The young midfielder really burst on to the scene in this summer’s World Cup. Christian Atsu put in a potential man of the match performance against the United States had his side managed to pull off the victory against the Americans. His pace and trickery gave Demarcus Beasley fits and his ability to come inside and shoot with his left was a thorn in Tim Howard’s side. He was not able to find the back of the net this World Cup but he was one of the bright spots for the Black Stars and is certainly a big player for the future for them.
In terms of his loan options, his standing with Ghana will allow him to get a work permit in England if the club so chooses but he can also make a loan move in the Bundesliga. His former coach believes half of each league is chasing the youngster and there is probably some truth to that after the year that Atsu has had. Chelsea would do well to bring him along for the preseason tour and to find him a loan at a club in England or Germany where his talents can be on full display.
