This was not the match reaction I was expecting to write. There were times during this World Cup semifinal match where I was truly at a loss for words. This was supposed to be about either Germany edging out an emotional Brazil that was missing their two best players in Neymar and Thiago Silva. Or it could have been about an emotional Brazil riding the wave of inspiration from Neymar’s injury to overcome a flawed German side that has only looked fluent against Portugal. Instead it is an obituary to the Brazil side of this era.
Instead, Germany steamrolled Brazil on their way to the World Cup Final with an absolutely astounding score of 7-1. Goals from Tomas Muller, Miroslav Klose, Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira, and Andre Schurrle proved the difference as Germany strutted their stuff in Belo Horizonte. Chelsea FC’s Oscar scored a consolation goal for Brazil but you could not score an “emptier” goal in world football than the one our midfield dynamo scored.

Germany was simply unstoppable today and it was no one player that rose above the rest. It was all eleven members or Die Mannschaft playing as a cohesive unit and showing these Brazilians the true meaning of joga bonita. Without Silva, Brazil was in chaos at the back. Dante is a capable defender but to expect David Luiz to replicate Silva’s discipline was pure madness. This loss could just as easily be pinned on Thiago Silva for his inexplicable yellow against Colombia as the eleven players on the field.
This was football domination in its purest form and wholesale changes are needed for Brazil. Players like Hulk, Fred, and Fernandinho would not have even sniffed the Brazil squads of old but now they are vital members of a flawed squad. If these men never wear a Brazil shirt ever again then it will not be soon enough for their international careers to be over. Brazil is in disarray after such a defeat but they will have to bounce back and rebuild from the ashes of this defeat for Russia 2018. But first, they must play in the third place game on Saturday and try to recover some shred of dignity.
