Granted, Robin van Persie did not have the World Cup he would have dreamt of. Then again, few players could do so while scoring 4 goals. David Moyes’s tenure has unfortunately come to an end much sooner than many would have liked. Louis van Gaal seems to have made the club his from his very first day at the job, and Manchester United are sure to pose a threat in the Premier League, in part thanks to the absence of European football.
The special bond van Gaal and van Persie have forged is no secret (one need only consider the high five the two gave each other following the salmon header against Spain), and van Persie will be the target man for most of, if not all, Manchester United’s attacking tactics. The Dutch striker is even reported to become the club’s new captain following Nemanja Vidic’s departure.
