Reports: Romelu Lukaku To Everton For £24M
Reports from Sky Sports have announced that Chelsea FC striker Romelu Lukaku will be sold to Everton FC for a fee believed to be around £24 million. The move has been rumored all summer long since Lukaku had a great season at Everton last year but now it remains to be seen when it will be made official by either club. Lukaku has also been linked to Wolfsburg and Juventus but those rumors were tenuous at best. It is surprising to see Chelsea sell a player to a domestic rival but after the sale of Juan Mata anything is possible these days.
The reports from Sky Sports said that all betting on Romelu Lukaku making a move to Everton had been suspended after the striker posted an Instagram photo of himself with a caption saying “Time to write a new chapter.” Many Chelsea fans on Twitter were upset at the tweet and saw it, much like the bookies, as a sign that he was leaving Chelsea for good.
Roberto Martinez on Everton’s need for a striker:
"“We clearly need to strengthen in the number nine position, the striker, and probably another attacking player. I am not too concerned about the timing (of signings), all I want to do is make sure we get the right footballers. We need up to three attacking players and that is bearing in mind the different ways we are going to play and attack. We know exactly our priorities and the names. We will work hard to get them but they need to be a perfect fit.”-Roberto Martinez"
If this is true then it leaves Chelsea in a position where they will still keep Fernando Torres on the books. Luckily for Chelsea fans they have replaced Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o with Didier Drogba and Diego Costa. Costa is a true striker and Drogba can still be a game changer even at his age. Lukaku was supposed to be the long term successor to Drogba but now it appears that he prefers to wear a slightly different shade of blue.
