Chelsea FC midfielder Oriol Romeu has been loaned to Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart for the 2013-14 season. Romeu was on loan at Spanish La Liga side Valencia where he made a great impression when he intitially arrived and was first choice in central midfield. Unfortunately for Romeu his season was sidetracked, as it often has been, by leg injuries and he became an auxiliary figure for the second half of the season.

Oriol Romeu played so well at Valencia when healthy that there were rumors of a permanent move and the midfielder himself was being coy in the media about the reports. Whether it was his injuries or the Valencia brass being unimpressed that kept him from a permanent move we will never know but Romeu returned to the Chelsea fold this summer.

In a surprise move for a player that was supposedly on his way out, Chelsea and Romeu agreed to a three-year contract extension. This lead to some speculation that Jose Mourinho had first team plans for the Spaniard this season. This speculation was intensified when Romeu saw significant minutes in preseason but it appears to have been more of an audition to other teams to prove that he was healthy

Many Chelsea fans believe that Oriol Romeu is not Chelsea quality and his recent performances seem to prove that. The new contract however proves that perhaps Mourinho or the Chelsea staff still believe that he can develop in to a top-tier player for the Blues. Or it could be that they want to keep him on the books so they can still cash in on him if he has a good season at Stuttgart. Good luck in Germany Oriol, we’ll be rooting for you!
