Chelsea FC’s Lewis Baker is on his first preseason tour with the first team and the youngster has been relishing his opportunity to learn from the big boys. He has been training with the first team since the team began their preseason tour against Wycombe Wanderers in early July. Baker has yet to score a goal for the first team but has notched two wonderful assists and has not looked out of place in the first team.

At just 19 years old, Baker is one of Chelsea’s brightest prospects and is perhaps their biggest hope of being the next academy player to become a regular. Baker experienced great success last season with the Under 21s and won two trophies, the U21 Premier League and the FA Youth Cup. Jose Mourinho has said that he will look to involve the youngster in the first team in some of the domestic cup competitions as he looks to get him ready for the big time.

"This is my first tour with the senior squad and it’s been a great experience for me. I’m training with some of the best players in the world and that can only help me improve. You definitely notice the difference (from training with the Under-21s), particularly off the ball. Everything is so compact and with the way the players defend it’s really hard to get through and create openings. You don’t have much time on the ball because of the way they press you, as soon as you try to turn you’re always going to have somebody in your face. It’s just a quicker tempo but it’s good for everyone, especially the younger players. At the start a few people were a bit nervous, wondering how they were going to fit in, especially the ones who haven’t been involved with the first team before. Everyone makes you feel so welcome, though, and the whole squad are getting on really well together. The sessions are always enjoyable, Jose Mourinho is a great manager to learn from.He always demands a lot but that’s because he believes in his players and knows we can do what he wants. I’m doing okay at the moment but it’s important for me to keep listening and learning every day if I want to improve.”Source: ChelseaFC.com"

Lewis Baker is saying and doing all the right things in a Chelsea shirt. He is a tremendous talent and could start for several Premier League clubs this season. Some fans believe he will be loaned out to a Championship or Premier League club this season but he could just as easily stay with Chelsea and see some first team action. Baker, along with several other youth players, appear ready to make the jump to the first team and now it is more of a matter of when and not if.
