After Frank Lampard announced that he would be leaving Chelsea FC this summer after 13 seasons with the team, many were wondering how the Blues would replace him. The challenge of replacing someone like Lampard is that not only must you find someone to match his production, but also someone who can assume his leadership role as well. With the addition of Cesc Fabregas Chelsea have certainly covered the first requirement but it is yet to be seen if he can be the leader that Lampard was for the Blues.

As far as Jose Mourinho is concerned, “Frank is Frank, he is irreplaceable, no chance. We have to forget Frank because as you know he is a very special man but very, very special player.” Most Chelsea fans would agree even if it pains them to see him wearing another English team’s shirt this season.
Mourinho went on to say, “I think we can never say, in spite of Cesc, who is a fantastic player as you know, you can never say, ‘This guy is coming to replace Frank’, because Frank is Frank.” If he is at the top of his game then Fabregas can indeed replace Frank Lampard’s production on the field. He has the same ability to read games, make the incisive pass, and of course score goals at a fantastic rate for a midfielder.
One thing is for sure, it will be very, very hard for Fabregas to become a Chelsea legend like Super Frank. Mourinho even believes that Lampard will have a statue outside of Stamford Bridge and that “one day he will be with Peter Osgood in a statue because he’s fantastic.” Even if the loan move has tarnished Lampard’s legacy in the eyes of some Chelsea fans, those same fans would still like to see their hero immortalized outside of the club’s historic ground.
