Roy Hodgson Not Ruling Out Frank Lampard From England Squad

When Frank Lampard signed for MLS club NYC FC many believed that it would be the end of his England career. However when he signed on loan to Manchester City it lead many to believe that he made the move to stay on the radar of Roy Hodgson after the retirement of current captain Steven Gerrard.

Well it appears that Roy Hodgson still has Frank Lampard on his radar no matter where he plays, whether it is in New York or Manchester. Hodgson did admit however that the England squad would look very different and that “It will be a new team in many respects, we’ve lost a lot of senior players in the two years building up to the World Cup and now we’ve lost Steven Gerrard.” England lost players like Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole in the buildup to the World Cup and decided to go with a younger and more dynamic squad.

Hodgson also said about Lampard, “I’m realistic and Frank’s realistic, too. It’s not easy, when you are playing in America, to go back and forth for the odd England game. It’s not saying it’s not a possibility, but realistically, looking forward, we know that Frank will be 38 in 2016.”

Despite his advanced age, Lampard can still be a contributor to the England squad and Hodgson admitted as much. He said, “you never know when you’ll need players. Don’t forget Frank has been captain during my time, he’s been vice-captain all the time, so someone I have very close connections with and strong respect for.”

So while it may be difficult for Frank Lampard to stay on as a member of the England squad because of his age, he may still be called upon for his leadership and experience. It will be a tough transition for Lampard to make but he has never been one to shy away from a challenge.
