Chelsea FC announced the squad numbers for the 2014/15 season before the friendly on Tuesday against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge. If you have been watching the preseason then there were few surprises on this list. The only real unexpected change has been for Victor Moses to take on the number 18 shirt this season when he used to wear the 13 before he was loaned out. Obviously this change was made to accommodate the possible number one keeper in Thibaut Courtois who wears number 13.

More from Chelsea FC News

Mohamed Salah switched to 17 after his 15 was taken by Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard switched to the vacant number 10 which he wears for his national team. Nathan Ake switched from number 27 and a whole host of other high numbers to a very respectable number 6 which suggests that Jose Mourinho has serious plans for him to be involved in the first team this season.

The same can be said about Kurt Zouma who was handed the number 5 shirt after Michael Essien wore it with distinction for so many years. New signings Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas, and Diego Costa have all taken numbers that were occupied last season. Luis did a like for like swap with previous leftback Ashley Cole who of course wore the number 3 shirt at Chelsea.

Frank Lampard’s number 8 shirt has also been left vacant which leads some to believe that the club is either unofficially retiring it like Gianfranco Zola’s 25 or just waiting for a worthwhile replacement. Or it could just be that no one on the squad has requested it.
