Chelsea FC: Marko Marin Officially Lands Serie A Loan
Chelsea FC officially announced today that Marko Marin and Serie A side Fiorentina had agreed to terms for the loan of the 23 year old German winger. Marin will join up with Fiorentina immediately, and hope to feature in their Serie A opener against former CFC teammate and current AS Roma leftback Ashley Cole. Rumors of his departure from a week or so ago seemed to have been proven true.
Marko Marin featured just 16 times for Chelsea in his first season with the Blues following his transfer from Werder Bremen in April of 2012. Marin was seen at the time to be a backup plan should the Blues not secure the services of Eden Hazard.
However, our victory over Bayern Munich in May of 2012 earned us Hazard’s signature and made life very difficult for a player once dubbed ‘the German Messi’.
Marko spent last season on loan at Sevilla in Spain, and added a Europa League medal to his personal trophy case. He indicated previously Sevilla wanted him to return, but it would seem Chelsea and the Spanish club couldn’t come to an agreement. Instead, the Tuscan sun of Florence will be where he plys his trade this season.
Given that he was not included on Chelsea’s preseason tour, despite not featuring for Germany at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, seemed to indicate that the future lies elsewhere for Marko Marin.
I was personally surprised that this deal was officially announced as a loan, as it seemed obvious to almost everyone Marko Marin will not see the pitch at Stamford Bridge in Chelsea blue again, however it is possible Jose Mourinho and the board wish to keep him as an insurance player.
In other news, Chelsea defeated Burnley 3-1 to open the 2014/15 Barclay’s Premier League campaign, with new boy Diego Costa opening his Chelsea scoring account.
Andre Schurrle and Branislav Ivanovic also contributed with goals in the victory.
