All eyes were on Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United team as they held the honour of kicking off this season’s Premier League, and unlike those in red, neutral watchers will not have been disappointed.

A home game against Swansea will have seemed like the ideal opening fixture for David Moyes’s successor (or should I say Ryan Giggs’s ?) to impose his new image and send a warning to their Mancunian neighbours. However, the self-proclaimed “best coach in the world” fell at the first hurdle. A well organised and fast-attacking Swansea team fully deserved the first three points taken from Old Trafford on opening weekend since 1972.

As he has admittedly stated on several occasions, Louis Van Gaal needs more players, and he needs them fast. This widely acknowledged fact remains despite them being Europe’s second highest net spenders. Fortunately for them, there is still time to bolster their squad this transfer window, but they will have to act fast and probably pay inflated prices for players.
