Manchester City kicked off their season with a potential banana skin of a fixture on Tyneside against a Newcastle side that has spent yet another transfer window making the most of their French scouting connections.
Against a home side whose starting line-up comprised of four debuts, Manchester City proved that they are still able to grind out results and get all three points despite being far from their intimidating best. Worryingly, this is a quality often attribute to eventual league champions. It was David Silva’s moments of brilliance which proved to be the difference, and lead Manchester City to winning at one of England’s toughest grounds with their star striker and record-breaking defensive addition on the bench.
Manchester City play hosts to Liverpool next Monday, in what will be a fascinating indicator as to the former’s title hopes and the latter’s top four ambitions.
