We meet Schalke in the Group Stages for a second consecutive year and Chelsea fans will be hoping they offer as little resistance as the ties last year. Chelsea won the home tie convincingly, coming out 3-0 victors after weathering a strong start from the German side. Recently departed strikers Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o were on the score sheet at Stamford Bridge that night and Chelsea will be hoping for more of the same from Costa and Drogba a year on.

The return fixture was a solid display that indicated Chelsea were serious European contenders last season. Torres maintained his impressive and somewhat out of character European form and netted twice. Hazard also grabbed a goal near the end.
The Bundesliga is a very strong league and it would be all too easy to underestimate Schalke after the games against them lasts season. However, they still progressed out of the group and finished 3rd in the Bundesliga behind heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. They will probably be Chelsea’s biggest test in the Group Stages, and youngsters Meyer, Goretzka and particularly Draxler are more than worth keeping an eye on.
