After reports of Marco van Ginkel refusing any loan move this season to fight for a place at Chelsea FC this season his departure seemed very unlikely. There were rumors that Fernando Torres’s move to Milan was contingent on Marco van Ginkel joining as well but we will never know for sure if that was the case.

Chelsea FC released a statement today that the Dutch midfielder has joined the Serie A side on a no strings attached loan for the rest of the season. He spent most of last season rehabbing from a torn ACL injury but was unable to force his way back in to the squad. Van Ginkel even made it to the provisional 30-man World Cup squad for the Netherlands but was cut before the tournament began.

"Marco van Ginkel has today joined AC Milan on a season-long loan.Van Ginkel, 21, arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer, making a promising start before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The Dutch midfielder worked hard to return to full fitness and was part of Jose Mourinho’s squad during pre-season. He will now link up with Chelsea team-mate Fernando Torres in Italy.Source: ChelseaFC.com"

The youngster also was in the preseason squad this summer and played well but not well enough to become a starter. His departure leaves the club a bit thin at central midfield especially with John Obi Mikel departing for the African Cup of Nations in January. Nathan Chalobah will be returning from loan then so perhaps he can fill the role of the departed Marco Van Ginkel.

He will hopefully be first choice in the AC Milan midfield and will have some familiar faces in Fernando Torres and Michael Essien with him at the club. That should make the transition easier for the youngster as he tries to adapt to a new league, a new city, and of course a new country. Van Ginkel is in good hands at AC Milan and we will follow his progress here at The Pride of London.
