The 25 year old Spanish international was signed for just £8 million and was seen as a depth signing but has since become one of the most important players in the squad. Azpilicueta was voted the player of the year by his teammates and also made the Premier League’s Best XI for the 2013/14 season. He has also become the first-choice rightback for the Spanish national team and has seen his star rise to new heights.
"Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Cesar Azpilicueta has today signed a new five-year contract. The defender joined the Blues from Marseille in August 2012 and has so far made 95 appearances for the club, scoring once in last season’s Capital One Cup victory at Arsenal.Azpilicueta, affectionately known as ‘Dave’ by supporters, ended his first Chelsea season by lifting the Europa League trophy in Amsterdam.Last season he was a member of the Barclays Premier League’s meanest defence which conceded just 27 times in 38 games. He also received the Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year award. The 25-year-old has begun this season in typically fine form and is currently away with the Spanish national team having represented them at this summer’s World Cup.Source: ChelseaFC.com"
Chelsea is looking more and more like a shrewd wheeler and dealer in the transfer market these days but what good is that if you do not hold on to your best and brightest? Extending Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract is a statement of intent that he is in the longterm plans for the club and the next step should be to lock down other young stars like Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois. Congratulations on your new contract Dave and best of luck!
