Frank Lampard Left Chelsea FC Without ‘Any Bad Feelings’
Frank Lampard has and always will be a legend at Chelsea FC. Even a loan stint at one of our Premier League rivals Manchester City would not change that, though unfortunately it has for some fans. Those fans believed that Frank Lampard turned down a contract from Chelsea and chose to go on loan at Manchester City.
Lampard has come out and denied that and said that he would have signed another contract for Chelsea if he was offered one. He continued to say that if he has signed that contract he would not have gone on loan to City but would still have signed with NYC FC at the end of it.
“Jose was brilliant about it. I didn’t walk out with any bad feelings towards him or the club.”
On signing with Chelsea, Frank Lampard said: “I would have obviously stayed if Chelsea had offered me another year. There was no reason for me to leave. Yes, I wanted to play a bit more regularly but I’m not stupid. If Chelsea had given me a new contract it would have been mad not to take it at the time. It wasn’t that I didn’t think I could still do it. If I felt like that I wouldn’t have gone to City on loan. I had a chat with Jose Mourinho and both he and the club were always great with me. The decision was made – and I don’t know who made it.”
So someone at the club, presumably after discussing it with Jose Mourinho, decided that it was time for Chelsea to part ways with Super Frank. They believed that the timing was right for the club to move on from one of its legends and focus on the future. A move that Lampard saw coming and does not blame them for.
Lampard said about the club moving on: “When we won the Champions League I knew there would be some sort of evolution. Chelsea wanted to bring in some younger players and it was the right move for the club. We had a fantastic spine of players who helped carry us through from one manager to another and win things, but it doesn’t last forever.”

“Jose was brilliant about it. I didn’t walk out with any bad feelings towards him or the club. I knew things were coming to a head but I’m realistic and, in football, I move on quite quickly. I also felt like I didn’t want to be a player who faded away – with that being the last memory people had of me.”
“So maybe it was the right time. Maybe it was right that the club took it out of my hands. I certainly didn’t want to go until I was 40 and just being rolled out for the Capital One Cup after the great times I had at the club. What I really want now is to make a really positive impact in my time at Manchester City and then again in the next stage of my career.”
While it is unfortunate that Frank Lampard could not leave Chelsea in a blaze of glory like Didier Drogba did the first time around, his sudden departure is better than him fading away in to obscurity. He realized that it was time to move on and find a new adventure in football and the club felt the same way.
Manchester United have shown us the danger in holding on to the past for too long and the Chelsea brass and Frank Lampard did not want to make that same mistake. In a few years’ time this loan move to Manchester City will be all but forgotten and Super Frank will be remembered only for all the things he did in Chelsea blue.
