Patrick Bamford has spent the last two seasons as a Chelsea FC player on loan to different clubs in League One and the Championship. Last year and in 2012-13 he spent half the season at League One side MK Dons, now famous for smashing Manchester United 4-0 in the League Cup, and was very impressive there. He managed 18 goals in 37 games for the Dons and earned a move to Championship side Derby County.

Bamford spent the second half of last season at Derby County where he was often played out on the wing rather than his preferred position of center forward. He still managed to score eight goals in 21 appearances while playing out of position and earned himself a spot on Chelsea’s preseason roster. Even in the preseason he scored a goal against AFC Wimbledon and showed that he is a natural scorer who can score wherever he players.

Many Chelsea fans hoped he would be the club’s third striker this season and Bamford said as much in an interview with The Guardian. However the club decided that he needed more experience and now Patrick Bamford is on loan at Middlesbrough where he joins Chelsea teammate Kenneth Omeruo.

Bamford spoke of his move to Middlesbrough and he wants it to be a platform to impress the brass at Chelsea. Bamford said of the move: “Success at Boro is the priority because doing well here is the key to me taking the next step. I have to be honest and say at the end of the day I want to be a Chelsea first team player. But to do that I know I need to make a success of my time at Boro. I need to get games, play well and score goals.

“I need the experience but I’m not here to go through the motions. I have to play well. I have to get into the team here, stay there and score. The best thing for me is to be a regular part of a team up there challenging for promotion. If I can do that here then I know that really improves my chances there”

This is precisely the attitude that the rest of our loanees should take. Patrick Bamford and the 26 other youngsters on loan should see their loans as chances to play regular football and impress Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea brass. They should see it as a great opportunity to one day break in to the first team and make their mark as Chelsea footballers.
