Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho defended his new striker who he believes has wrongly received the reputation as a combative player. Diego Costa has been a target of opponents trying to provoke the striker in to getting carded and only one team has succeeded so far.

Mourinho believes that the reputation Diego Costa has is “a completely fake point. Maybe it’s a point based on what happened in previous seasons, not what happened here. Here he got the right advice, the right education.” The manager believes that Diego Costa has become more calm at Chelsea after receiving what he called the “right advice”.
Jose Mourinho also spoke about how the referees should be keeping an eye on the opponents when they try to goad his striker. “The referees are there to see the provocation. Diego is trying to play. He’s not afraid of aggressive opponents. He doesn’t let other players intimidate him. He’s not there to provoke people. He’s there to play football and to score goals,” said Mourinho.
The manager then turned his attention to the two bookings Diego Costa has received so far and said, “He got two yellow cards. One is completely unfair because it was a penalty. The second one because he was provoked for the whole game and he had a little reaction. He’s being completely fair and giving zero problems to referees and behaving very, very well and just worried about playing his football.”
Diego Costa has had his fair share of run-ins with opponents and referees but he has kept his nose clean this season. Jose Mourinho is renowned for his man management and perhaps he has helped Diego Costa channel that anger and negative energy in to more positive avenues. If that is the case then hopefully Mourinho will continue doing what he is doing with the Spanish striker.
