Shrewsbury Town, or “The Shrews”, currently sit sixth in the League Two table and just defeated Championship side Norwich City in their last Capital One Cup match by a score of 1-0. . Chelsea could not have asked for an easier draw in the 4th round and the only thing that could complicate things a bit is that it is an away match. The club’s reserves could still win the match with relative ease and it will give Jose Mourinho another chance to give the youngsters some game time the way he did today against Bolton.
Chelsea FC last faced Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup in 2002 and the Blues ran out 4-0 winners. Gianfranco Zola scored twice for the Blues in that match and hopefully this year’s edition of the tie ends in a similar scoreline.
Here is the rest of the draw for the Capital One Cup 4th Round (home teams in bold):
Stoke City vs. Southampton
AFC Bournemouth vs. West Bromwich Albion
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Brighton & Hove Albion
MK Dons vs. Sheffield United
Manchester City vs. Newcastle United
Shrewsbury Town vs. Chelsea
Liverpool vs. Swansea City
Fulham vs. Derby County
The 4th round features two meetings between Premier League teams and Chelsea was lucky enough to avoid facing any of their top-flight counterparts. The Blues could certainly manage a win over any of the remaining Premier League teams but there would be less squad rotation and a lesser likelihood of players like Lewis Baker or Kurt Zouma making an appearance.
