Turkish Airlines confirmed on their Twitter page that they will be Chelsea FC’s new shirt sponsor next year. They will replace South Korean electronics giant Samsung who have been featured as either Samsung Mobile or simply Samsung since 2005. There were rumors that Samsung was looking to jump ship from Chelsea but the UEFA Champions League victory changed their mind and the two parties signed an extension.

Chelsea FC’s extension with Samsung is reportedly worth around £18 million a year which is far behind the supposed £50 million a year Manchester United is receiving from automotive giant Chevrolet. The Chelsea deal is also behind Barcelona’s deal with Qatar Foundation worth about £28 million annually and Real Madrid’s £24 million deal with Emirates Airlines.
The confirmation from Turkish Airlines:
There was some concern about the Turkish Airlines logo being intrusive or clashing with the Chelsea shirt because the primary version of it is red. The Samsung logo fits seamlessly with the current Chelsea shirt and it has been the sponsor for so long that it is considered part of it. The fears about the logo have been allayed since photos of Galatasaray’s new kit have been released with the Turkish Airlines logo on the front for Champions League matches.

As you can see from the image above, Turkish Airlines selected a simple white typeface which is similar to the current Samsung logo. Aesthetics aside, all that matters is that the deal with Turkish Airlines is worth more than the deal with Samsung. In the world of FFP Chelsea needs all the funds it can get to help offset the cost of recruiting world class talent so welcome Turkish Airlines!
