John Terry Celebrates 100th Champions League Appearance With Victory

When John Terry made his Champions League debut in August of 2003, how many Chelsea FC fans would have believed you if you told them he would be making his 100th appearance in the competition eleven years later. As a matter of fact, would John Terry himself have believed you? Even the most dedicated supporter would have called you crazy or at the very least a little bit deluded.

More from Champions League

So when John Terry made his 100th appearance this week, it came as it usually does, with a victory and all three points. Terry was his usual composed self in the Chelsea FC backline and was rarely called to action which is a good sign of a complete defensive performance.

John Terry spoke about the match against Sporting CP and said, “They’re a good side but it’s been about 10 years since they’ve been in the Champions League so it was a big night for them. We had so many chances, it was one of those nights where it just didn’t go in, but thankfully ‘Mati’ came up with a good header. We lost our first game last year and came back to win the group – so that was in our minds; that we had to win.”

The Chelsea skipper has always been about business first. He is the type of player to sacrifice himself for the team and he leads by example. Terry said of his 100th Champions League appearance, “I’m very proud, there’s not too many players to achieve that”. Not many players have achieved that milestones and in fact the top 10 appearances leaders reads like a list of the best players to ever grace the European stage. Names like Ryan Giggs, Paolo Maldini, Xavi, and Roberto Carlos are on that list and if things continue the way they are, John Terry can be included as well.
