Filipe Luis was selected to the starting lineup once again in midweek competition as he played the full 90 minutes against Sporting CP in Chelsea FC’s first away date in the Champions League. The former Atletico Madrid leftback has been unable to replace Cesar Azpilicueta as a regular in the starting lineup but he provides tremendous depth at the position for Jose Mourinho to deploy when needed.

The Brazilian defender has yet to start a match in the Premier League for the Blues but he has been selected for matches against Bolton Wanderers and Schalke 04 and has done extremely well in relief of Cesar Azpilicueta. Against Bolton and Sporting CP he also showed his knack for pushing forward and supporting in attack and came agonizingly close to notching an assist against the Lisbon club.
Filipe Luis on wanting to earn his place and win titles:
"“Everyone here wants to play. When you do not play, you’re not happy at all, but I came here, to Chelsea, to win titles. The team is always more important than any player. The season is very long. Everyone will have their chance and will try to take it.”Source: Goal.com"
When he arrived from Atletico Madrid, Filipe Luis must have realized the tough situation he was facing to break in to the regular Chelsea starting eleven. He was behind Azpilicueta, the club’s reigning player of the year and Branislav Ivanovic who has been a regular for years now. His best situation would be to replace Azpilicueta at leftback and see the Spaniard go back to his natural position of right back.
Many fans have felt that a defensive back four of Filipe Luis, Gary Cahill, John Terry, and Azpilicueta would be optimal considering Ivanovic’s struggles in defense. The Serbian has been a terror in attack however and has held his own against some of the better sides Chelsea have faced. However if Filipe Luis keeps putting in composed defensive shifts like he has been, he will get his chance sooner than later.
