When Didier Drogba rode off in to the sunset after winning the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea FC, it was expected that he would return to Stamford Bridge at some point. Few would have expected Drogba to return to the club as a player just two years later but stranger things have happened in world football (see Frank Lampard playing for Manchester City).

This week, Jose Mourinho confirmed what we have all been thinking, Didier Drogba is here to stay for the long term at Chelsea FC. At 37 years old there is not much left in the tank for Drogba as a player but he has so much more to offer the club. There was hope that he would be able to mentor Romelu Lukaku and that did not quite work out but there are plenty of youngsters for Drogba to take under his wing.
"“It is a return to stay. No longer will there be more (Drogba) in China or Drogba playing at Galatasaray. Drogba will be a coach or assistant youth football team or the main ambassador of Chelsea or assistant director of sports. There will be a role for him what he wants. He is a player who Mr. Abramovich wants at the club.”-Jose MourinhoSource: Telegraph"
Ideally Drogba could take on a hybrid role as a coach and ambassador for the club. He is already busy with his charitable works in his native country and if he could pair that with work for Chelsea it would be fantastic for him and the club. Droba, along other legends like Frank Lampard and John Terry will always have a place at the club and they will get the recognition they deserve once they retire. They became legends under Jose Mourinho and it is great to see the manager recognize the players that changed his career and the course of Chelsea history.
