What may have been forgotten in the tumultuous match between Arsenal and Chelsea FC was the scary collision between Thibaut Courtois and Alexis Sanchez early in the second half. The collision was between the side of Courtois’s head and Sanchez’s thigh that looked to have knocked out the Belgian goalkeeper.

After being looked over by the Chelsea FC medical staff, Thibaut Courtois continued on in the match even though he was visibly bleeding from his ear. Thirteen minutes later, the young Belgian was brought off in favor of Petr Cech and was reportedly taken to the hospital for further examinations. Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho told the press after the match that the injury is “nothing special” and it is “nothing to be too much worried about”.

Well that does not quite assuage our fears as Thibaut Courtois looked to be knocked out cold and was clearly disoriented after the collision. There was an uproar on social media about Courtois being allowed to continue at all after the collision and that he should have been subbed off right away.
With the international break upcoming this week, Thibaut Courtois should be left off the Belgium squad and allowed to rest up and recover. Hopefully Marc Wilmots will listen to common sense and the Chelsea FC medical staff and allow his young keeper to sit out the Euro 2015 qualifiers and deploy Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet instead. This was a scary incident but it may end up being a blessing in disguise as Courtois may be rested rather than travel with the Belgian international squad.
