Should Chelsea FC Sell Petr Cech To Real Madrid?

Rumors have begun to swirl that Real Madrid is set to sniff around Stamford Bridge looking to lure Petr Cech away from Chelsea FC this January. Given Iker Casillas’s very public struggles both in a Real Madrid and Spain shirt, and Keylor Navas’s relative inexperience, adding an established veteran like Petr Cech makes perfect sense. Does the move however make sense for Chelsea FC and Petr Cech?

When Real Madrid signed Keylor Navas after his fantastic performances with Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup, not many people believed he would be the keeper of the future at the Bernabeu. It seemed more like a depth signing to cover for the departure of Diego Lopez to AC Milan and it has proven to be the case so far. Despite Casillas’s struggles, Keylor Navas has only made one appearance for Real.

It takes a strong manager to replace a club and country legend like Iker Casillas and it appears Carlo Ancelotti may not be that man. Despite his poor form and his demotion from the Spain starting XI, Casillas is still the number one in Madrid. So where does Petr Cech fit in to all this? The rumors claim that Petr Cech’s relationship and familiarity with Carlo Ancelotti will help grease the wheels on the move but would Cech want to make the move in the first place?

These same rumor mills are claiming that Real Madrid is preparing to spend upwards of £40 million on Manchester United keeper David De Gea this summer for him to be the future number one. De Gea is in line to become the main man for Spain so it would continue the tradition of La Furia Roja’s number one being from Real Madrid, not to mention that he is a fantastic keeper. So if that were the case, it would mean Petr Cech would become displaced once again by another hot shot young keeper.

For Chelsea FC, selling Petr Cech to Real Madrid makes sense on a number of levels. First it would remove him from the Premier League so they would not have to face him twice a year or more and they would not strengthen a direct rival. Real Madrid also has very deep pockets so they would not balk at whatever Chelsea FC’s asking price is for the keeper. Petr Cech is also not cup tied for the Champions League so that would not be an issue. The only issue is that Jose Mourinho may not have complete faith in Mark Schwarzer taking over in case of another injury to Thibaut Courtois.

So what is the right call in this situation? If Chelsea FC were to sell Petr Cech this January then they should look at clubs outside of the Premier League and of course Real Madrid fits that criteria. However the best decision would be to keep Petr Cech for the rest of the season and sell him to the club of his choosing in the summer. It would allow Petr to choose the situation that is right for him but also right for the club.
