Manchester United can still catch Chelsea FC and win the Premier League according to self confessed “arrogant” manager Louis van Gaal.
Manchester United welcome a determined and highly efficient Chelsea FC team to Old Trafford on Saturday for their first ‘real’ test of the season so far and the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager insists his faltering team can take the game to Chelsea and close the gap from its current 10 points to 7, and challenge Chelsea for the championship.
Van Gaal’s comments came directly after United’s less than inspiring draw against West Bromwich Albion, in which the Red Devils had to come from behind twice to register a draw.
“Call me arrogant but we can still catch Chelsea,” Van Gaal said. “I have done it before.
“It is two points lost. I think we were the better team.
“I am very disappointed about the result. I don’t think West Bromwich Albion has created many chances, I think zero, and we gave the two goals away.”
I have to say that van Gaal must have been watching a different game to the one I watched, as United rarely troubled the ‘Baggies’ defence and ended up lucky to scrape the draw. In fact, it came down to Marouane Fellaini to rescue United, coming on as a second-half substitute and adding a physical element that had up until then, been severely missing in action from the players in red.
If Manchester United are going to have any chance of beating the current leaders in the Premier League title race, then they will need Fellaini to re-create his performance of last night and galvanise a disjointed and confused looking Manchester United team.
If that’s not possible, van Gaal may be on the end of a lesson in football management from his former apprentice.
