Atletico Madrid had just won La Liga, had already convincingly knocked Chelsea FC out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage, and gone on to narrowly miss out on winning the competition completely, but star striker Diego Costa had already decided he needed another challenge. An opportunity to prove himself in another league. The Premier League.

The fact that Costa decided to come to Chelsea may from the outside appear somewhat strange, given the fact Atletico had beaten them and looked a better all round proposition, but speaking with Champions League Magazine, the Brazilian born, Spanish striker explained:

"“I was extremely happy at Atletico and the last year when we achieved so much was the best year of my career as a footballer.“However, you always try to improve your life. The opportunity to join this tremendously important club came and while Atleti is a great team, this was a different league, one I’d always wanted to try.“People always used to say that my game would fit the Premier League perfectly and so the opportunity to sign for an extremely famous club like Chelsea made me super-excited.“I have to keep on working hard. I still have many years ahead of me in my career so I hope I will be able to play in another Champions League final – to have another opportunity to win this competition.”"

So far it seems to be working out well for the young man from the small Brazilian town of Lagarto, to whom having to constantly prove himself time and time again, is nothing new.

Despite a number of spells out on loan in Portugal and Spain, Costa has developed into one of, if not ‘the’ most comprehensive and lethal strikers in the Premier League. If he can recover from a problematic hamstring and get over the issues that have caused him to miss the last three matches for Chelsea, Diego Costa’s dream of lifting the Champions League trophy may well come true.
