The latest Chelsea FC transfer rumours update this morning, relates to stories suggesting that Jose Mourinho and Chelsea football club are desperate to sign former Manchester United and current FC Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique in January.
Really? Seriously?
Look, I like Pique. He’s a talented defender and good enough for almost any top European team, but Chelsea do not need to buy anyone as of yet in January, and certainly don’t need to splash a reported £24 million on a 27 year-old who also happens to be struggling with his game.
As with many so-called ‘reports’, this has originated from a source whom is said to be trusted and reliable, but in my opinion is anything but. This rumour appears to come from a guy called Francois Gallado who has form for this type of thing. He’s apparently the same guy who stated that Danny Welbeck was top of Real Madrid’s list to replace Alvaro Morata, and better still, the guy behind the rumour that Lionel Messi would be leaving Barcelona to play for Paris Saint-Germaine.
So as you can see, his strike rate isn’t all that good, is it?
But even if Gallado is right in saying that Pique wants to leave and will be going to Chelsea, why would Jose Mourinho even consider Pique, and indeed, why would Pique want to leave Barca?
Ian McCourt sums up Pique’s desire (not) to leave perfectly here: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/oct/29/football-transfer-rumours-barcelonas-gerard-pique-to-chelsea
Mourinho has been quoted many times stating the fact that you only buy in January if you really have to, or the price is so ridiculously low, it would be crazy not to.
Chelsea right now, are not in either situation. With John Terry playing as though he was still in his late 20s, and Kurt Zouma continuing to develop into a top class defender behind Terry and Cahill, plus Tomas Kalas ready to come back at any time, there’s really no emergency to manage.
Besides which, Barcelona are not exactly overflowing with defenders. Indeed, it’s the one area they have continuously neglected season after season and had to scramble to buy Thomas Vermaelen.
I’ll stick my neck out here and state that this Chelsea FC transfer rumours story is well and truly BUSTED!
