Chelsea FC To Face Derby County In Capital One Cup QuarterFinals

Chelsea FC’s reward for barely seeing off League Two side Shrewsbury Town is facing yet another lower league side in the Capital One Cup quarterfinals. This time around the Blues will head to Derby to face Championship side Derby County. The Rams are currently sitting atop the Sky Bet Championship table ahead of Watford FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference alone. This suggests that they are as good as, or perhaps better than, a handful of sides in the Premier League.

Derby County came very close to earning promotion last season until they lost their playoff final to QPR thanks to a last minute goal from Bobby Zamora. The Rams carry with them the distinction of having one of the worst top flight campaigns in the history of the Premier League having won just one match during the 2007-08 campaign. This is still a club with some prestige as they have won the first division twice in 1972 and 1975 and won the FA Cup way back in 1945.

This is of course a much changed Derby County side from the one that went nearly winless in the Premier League and they have come a long way to reestablish themselves as one of the powers of the Sky Bet Championship. Chelsea FC faced them last season the third round of the FA Cup and were 2-0 victors in a match that was closer than the scoreline suggests. This is also the stage of the competition when Chelsea was eliminated last year so let us hope for a different result this time around.
