Shrewsbury Town Manager Dissapointed After Chelsea FC Loss

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon’s side put up a very good fight against a Chelsea FC side that as of Tuesday was 72 places ahead of them in the English football hierarchy. As we have seen time and time again in these domestic cups, the place or league that a side is currently can have little to no bearing on the outcome of the match.

We have seen giants crush minnows, minnows fight valiantly in defeat against clubs with 100 times their budgets, and of course we have seen those same minnows triumph over their much vaunted opponents. After Shrewsbury Town scored their equalizer late in the second half, many believed that one of the greatest upsets in football could be in the works. Luckily for Chelsea FC fans, the Blues turned up the pressure and won by the slimmest of margin, leaving Micky Mellon and the Shrewsbury Town faithful.

Micky Mellon on his side’s performance against Chelsea FC:

"“I just said to the players there, if someone would have said that we would have felt gutted and disappointed at the end of a game against Chelsea, we probably would have taken that emotion. It meant we would have been pleased, but we’re gutted because we lost it on little bits of detail. Losing a goal so early in the second half and then, when we had good possession of the ball on the far side, we fall and they catch us on the break. That’s why they’re where they are.”"

Shrewsbury Town had nothing to hang their heads about after their valiant defeat at the hands of the Blues. There is no such thing as a moral victory in football but to do so well against a much favored side will do wonders for the Shrews’ confidence. Micky Mellon may be disappointed at the result on Tuesday but he can be proud of how his team scratched and clawed for 90 minutes against a vastly superior opponent.
