Jose Mourinho: I Want To Work 15-20 More Years At The Top

Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho told the press that he wants to manage a top club for another 15-20 years or until he hits his 70th birthday. Mourinho has been a top level manager for a little over 12 years now and in such a short period of time he has won nearly every trophy available in European football.

Jose Mourinho’s career accomplishments are almost too numerous to mention but some of the highlights include seven domestic league titles with four teams in four countries and the UEFA Champions League twice with FC Porto and Inter Milan. Mourinho has yet to win the big one with Chelsea FC but if he plans on managing at a top club for another two decades then a manager of his caliber is almost certain to win it at least once more.

"“For me, the situation is clear. I want to work 15 or 20 more years at the top. When you reach the top, you want to stay at the top. That’s normal. If during this time, I do well enough to stay in a top level club, I will. If I don’t do well enough, and my market changes and I only have smaller clubs waiting for me, I will.“I don’t think anyone likes to change from big to smaller, and from big expectations and projects to small ones. But I repeat, I want to work if I’m physically and mentally strong enough, which I expect to be, for another 15 to 20 years.”“Every club I went to was a big club, but not the best, not the one with most resources, not the one in the best conditions to win. Every time I had big challenges, more challenging, in a certain way, than working in a small team. Every job is difficult. Every job has some expectations. When you are at a small club wanting to stay in a division, it’s a hard job.“When you are in mid-table and the ambition is to finish top six and in a European position, it’s difficult too. Every job has specific difficulties, but I don’t think being a football manager is an easy job for anyone.”Source: ESPN FC"

When Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea FC after winning the treble with Inter Milan and departing Real Madrid under some poor circumstances, many fans hoped that he would become the Alex Ferguson of Stamford Bridge. Ferguson managed Manchester United for almost 30 years and won about two dozen trophies, considerably more if you count FA Community Shields as legitimate silverware.

The best case scenario would be for Jose Mourinho to match that feat with Chelsea FC. He went trophyless in his first season and if he was any other manager, owner Roman Abramovich may have sent him packing like he has to so many others. Instead, Abramovich appears to have complete faith in Mourinho and the manager has faith in his squad and the youngsters he is developing. So if Mourinho does want to manage for another 20 years and if he can continue to manager at such a high level, with any luck he will be manning the touchline for the Blues until he decides to retire.
