Chelsea FC defender Cesar Azpilicueta praised his side’s strong mentality after their 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League. The Blues have not played their best football in recent weeks but have yet to lose a match in any competition this season. In fact they have only trailed in four matches, against Burnley, Swansea City, Maribor, and on Saturday against Liverpool. In each of those matches the Blues came back to either win or come within a missed penalty of a victory in the case of the match against Maribor.

They are still conceding late goals but as Cesar Azpilicueta said it is important to recognize that a team can not always win easy or even play well. The Blues have shown tremendous fight and fortitude but still need to clean up the issue with conceding late equalizing goals. Those goals were scored because of a single player shutting off on defense and not playing the 90th minute the way he played his first. As a team however they have been mentally strong enough to shrug off deficits and not get frustrated with compact defenses.
Cesar Azpilicueta on Chelsea FC being “stronger mentally” this season:
"“I think we are stronger mentally now. The players who came have given us another dimension as well. I think you saw that. When the team was losing we were still really strong mentally. The whole squad know we have to fight together. Some players have more talent, some score goals, and sometimes we have to defend for them – but the main thing is we do it all as a team. We got it back to 1-1 pretty soon and after that did very well. Obviously we’d prefer not to go behind but that is going to happen at times.“Over the last few games maybe we haven’t played our best football and the scores have been tight but over the whole season you know that everyone can’t keep playing very well and winning easy. We knew it would be tough here (at Anfield) but we fought so hard until the end – the aim was just to get those three points and we did. Last year we were so close to winning the title and this year we know it will be tough but that’s what we want. We will see in May. We’re on top of the table but that’s a long way off, but we want as few problems as possible up to then.”Source: Sky Sports"
Against Liverpool, Chelsea FC and Cesar Azpilicueta were dominant for much of the match. They could have easily had another two goals on the day but were not clinical enough to pull away from Liverpool. They were able to see out the one goal margin, something they have struggled to do at times this season. Despite these struggles, this is a much better Chelsea FC side than last season and one big reason is the mentally and fight they have shown under adverse circumstances.
