Is This Didier Drogba’s Last Year At Chelsea FC?

Chelsea FC legend Didier Drogba returned to Stamford Bridge this season after a two year hiatus but is this is his last season as a Blue? Drogba hinted at that in comments he made to the Evening Standard when he said “there is one more year to go let’s do it, let’s win more trophies, let’s make history again.”

Could that just be Didier Drogba trying to motivate his Chelsea FC teammates or does he mean that there really is only more year in his Blues career? At 36 years old going on 37, it is hard to imagine Drogba continuing to play football at a high level for another few years. He has proven this year that he can still be a major threat but he cannot continue to play at that pace at his age.

"“This year the key for me is to enjoy my football and to be with my team-mates and to win trophies. There is one more year to go so let’s do it, let’s win more trophies, let’s make history again. This relationship between me and the fans goes both ways, the way they show their support and the way they love me. If there is some way I love them even more because of all we achieved together, all the history. I have always said my first eight years here were the best years of my career. I know they enjoyed it because I did. I’m far from all the players who made history here, but I’m also next to them.”"

Didier Drogba has won every trophy available to him at the club level for Chelsea FC and even added three trophies to his cabinet from his time at Galatasaray including the Turkish League trophy. He is a champion plain and simple and he used his considerable fortune to fund charitable causes in his native country of Ivory Coast.

Drogba certainly has no financial need to continue playing football but he may keep playing so he can maintain that stream of funding for his charities. This year may be the end of his career with Chelsea FC as they will look to add some youth to their striker rotation but Drogba could conceivably play another few years in the Middle East or even the MLS. Wherever Didier Drogba goes one thing is certain, he will bring his championship mentality to that club and make them all the better for it.
