John Swift Recalled From Rotherham United
Chelsea FC youngster John Swift has been recalled early from his loan at Championship side Rotherham United after he made only four appearances for The Millers. This was John Swift’s first loan and it has not ended well after he spent nearly three months not seeing any match minutes. This is yet another example of a loan spell gone bad for a Chelsea FC youngster but thankfully the Blues were able to recall Swift before the entire year was wasted.
John Swift joined Chelsea FC as a U14 academy player and signed his first professional contract with the Blues when he turned 17 years old. After training with the first team in the tail end of the season he made his debut for Chelsea FC on the final day of the 2013-14 season in the 88th minute in the 2-1 win over Cardiff City. Swift is a very promising young prospect who has 26 appearances for England at different youth levels and at just 19 he certainly has his best years ahead of him.
"John Swift has returned to Chelsea, after his loan spell was brought to an end. It was agreed to be in the best interests for all parties that the player could continue his development with his parent club, after the talented midfielder was unable to make a significant impact on the first team whilst with the Millers.”“He signed on the eve of the Millers’ final pre-season game, when they faced Doncaster Rovers, but hasn’t played since the defeat to Watford back in August. We would like to thank John for his efforts whilst on loan with the Millers, and wish him the very best of luck in his career.”Source: TheMillers.co.uk"
Loan spells often go bad if the manager of the loan club does not have the best interests of the player at heart or if he does not think he is good enough to make the team. The question then becomes, why sign a player on loan if you are not going to play him? In John Swift’s case, he was buried so deep on the Rotherham United bench that he surely could have learned more from simply training at Cobham every day. Ideally the Blues will find him a more suitable place to play in the second half of the season.
