Chelsea FC are reportedly chasing defender Tyrone Mings as a possible long term replacement for John Terry. The 6’3″ 21 year old Mings is currently plying his trade for Ipswich Town FC in the Championship. He has started nearly every match for Ipswich this season and has helped the Tractor Boys to fourth in the table.

These rumors come to us courtesy of John Cross from the Daily Mirror and he claims that Jose Mourinho has told his scouts “to keep tabs” on the youngster because they see him “as a potential long-term replacement for John Terry”.

This is high praise for a player that has yet to even receive an England U21 call up but to be fair to him he has only been a first teamer since the start of this season. He made his debut for Ipswich late in the 2012-13 season and only made 16 appearances in the 2013-14 campaign.

All he has done since becoming a regular in the starting eleven has been to earn Championship Player of the Month plaudits for September 2014. His manager Mick McCarthy believes that he can become the best fullback in the Championship and with his combination of size and pace that may not be very far off.

John Cross of the Mirror on Tyrone Mings being tracked by Chelsea FC:

"“Jose Mourinho has ordered his scouts to keep tabs on Tyrone Mings as a potential long-term replacement for John Terry at Chelsea. The 21-year-old Ipswich defender is one of the hottest properties in English football, with Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton and Newcastle also interested.Mings has played at left-back in his breakthrough season, but the powerful 6ft-3in kid is seen as having the attributes to move to centre-half… Mings would be a prized capture after an impressive season as he works his way back from being released by Southampton as a teenager.”Source: Mirror"

If Chelsea FC were to add yet another fullback to their squad, Tyrone Mings would face some stiff competition to get in to the side. If he switches over to centerback, which a player of his size is certainly capable of, he may find his path to the first team a bit clearer. John Terry is playing at a high level but his time is running out and Gary Cahill is in his prime but is no spring chicken.

Chelsea FC have a fantastic young centerback in Kurt Zouma and have Andreas Christensen and Kenneth Omeruo waiting in the wings but Mings could throw his name in to the ring as well. Jose Mourinho seems to prefer having four capable centerbacks in his squad and if Tyrone Mings can beat one or two of them out in the future then he may have a place on this team.

This is all pure speculation at this point and some may even ask why Chelsea FC would add yet another defender to their books if they already have so many capable ones. What those folks need to remember is that Jose Mourinho bases his squad selection on competition and he is relentlessly pursuing great talent to keep his squad fresh and competitive.
