Jose Mourinho: Chelsea FC Can Cope With Diego Costa Suspension

Chelsea FC forward Diego Costa will be suspended for the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur but Jose Mourinho thinks his side can overcome it. Costa was suspended for yellow card accumulation after he received a yellow card for a flailing arm that hit Sunderland defender Wes Brown in the face. The striker was also a bit lucky to not receive his first yellow or even a straight red for lashing out at John O’Shea after he was tackled from behind.

If this was last season and we did not have Loic Remy or Didier Drogba to lead the line in place of Diego Costa, there would be cause for concern. Though to be fair to our strikers last year, Samuel Eto’o scored the opener and Demba Ba scored a brace in the last fixture against Tottenham. Loic Remy and Drogba are a far more potent combo than last year’s pair and the Blues did not have Cesc Fabregas to break down defenses as well.

Jose Mourinho on replacing Diego Costa:

"“No. We’ll play (Loic) Remy or (Didier) Drogba. We don’t cry about injured players or about suspended players. If he’s suspended, he’s suspended. He can rest, he can be fresh against Newcastle and against Tottenham, Drogba and Remy will have their opportunity to start the game. No problem, let’s go. Why do you speak all the time about Diego? I don’t agree, I don’t agree. I was just told that he was unlucky to get the yellow card.”"

Gus Poyet weighed in on Diego Costa’s yellow card:

"“That’s Diego, always on the line, close to the limit. The first one with John O’Shea, there was a little bit of a situation in there. But those decisions, if they go one way or the other, I would say the same here. But it’s true that sometimes you give the ref the chance, and if you give the ref the chance, then it’s difficult to complain. But I’m pleased he is going to be able to play because he’s the best striker in the league and you want to see him week in, week out.”"

All due respect to Tottenham Hotspur but if Chelsea can’t beat the Spurs at Stamford Bridge, even without Diego Costa, then they do not deserve to be title contenders. Spurs have won their last two matches but they are miles below the Blues in terms of talent and ability. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is a man under siege at White Hart Lane and the Blues need to pile more pressure on the Argentine.

Luckily for Chelsea fans, Spurs are a side that actually come out and attack rather than sit back and defend, leaving their questionable back four vulnerable to the Chelsea counter. Players with pace such as Loic Remy and Willian should have a field day against a high-pressing Spurs defense and they can make Diego Costa and his suspension an after thought in what is a vital match for the Blues.
